Illustrations are decorations interpreting or visually explaining a concept, process, or text designed for integration in published media. This includes posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games, and films. Think back to when you were a toddler and you would 'read' picture books. These books don't have text, or wording, The stories are being told with the use of visuals called Illustrations. We 'read' or interpret illustrations based on our experiences, our imagination, knowledge, and the context accompanied by the illustration. No one necessarily taught us how to do this, but it is something that occurs naturally and actually requires a bit of skill.
Although many illustrators use their unique style to allow their work to be recognizable, some illustrators like Christoph Niemann and Kristian Mensa create mixed media illustrations, incorporating everyday objects. Look at the examples below from both illustrators to see how they incorporate the everyday objects such as food, nature, and office supplies.

Your Mission: |
Teacher Examples: |
Look around your room...
your kitchen.....your entire HOUSE! Really look at the objects you use everyday (headphones, rubber bands, food, etc.) Move the objects around so you can see them from all different view points and angles. When you are looking at the object, try to come up with an image that you can make using the object. Once you have the idea, draw it out, using ANY materials you have available at home. Position the object with your drawing so they are unified in the illustration. In Your Portfolio:- Upload your photo to your portfolio with your initials and '20 written in one of the bottom corners
- Write about what you drew and what object you incorporated into your illustration - Explain whether you think your illustration is successful or not & what you would do differently. |
