Skateboard Product Design

Product Design

After successfully completing this course, you can decide to apply these skills by becoming a product designer.
A product designer  combines design, engineering, and manufacturing processes in order to create functional products for a particular customer. The customer and/or client are essential to think about prior to creating the concept because it will influence the design and how the product functions. For instance, products created for children are going to look and function extremely differently than adult products.

To begin, a product designer creates a concept. The concept of the product being designed are clear, thought-out sketches.
Sketches include multiple views of the design, color swatches, and color outs.
Call outs are text near a specific area of the design that further explain the design, product, or function.
They are used to draw attention to the important parts of the product and are crucial for the manufacturer or investor to understand.

Developing the concept and drawing precise sketches are the two most important steps in product designing.
They enable you, the product designer, to truly think about every aspect of the product, forcing you to think about the answers to questions that haven't been asked yet, and solutions to problems you didn't know existed. You only have one shot to sell your idea, make it count!

Your Mission:

You will be designing your own, original skateboard or snowboard deck, following the same steps as a product designer would.

Step 1: You will sketch a minimum of 3 different designs of your product using the available template. These must be done using paper and pencil, have a title or name for your product. All 3 sketches can run together like a mural or the 3 designs can be separate...your choice.
** These 3 sketches will be graded separately. Please refer to the provided rubric for all requirements **
Step 2: Scan your final concept and upload to Adobe Illustrator.
Your design must be completed entirely using the pen tool, various lines/strokes, and texture effects. Remember, your design MUST be ORIGINAL (no logos, brands, or designs already made). BE CREATIVE!
Your artwork should be able to stand alone as an art piece.
** The final design will be graded separately. Please refer to the provided rubric for all requirements **

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is the most successful design you created and why?
    1. Is your sketch more successful than your digital version? EXPLAIN
  2. What could you do differently to improve your designs overall?                EXPLAIN how it would make the product better.
  3. Do you think sketching your design on a template helped the final outcome of the product design?                                                                      EXPLAIN why or why not.
