Propaganda Posters

Frank Shepard Fairey

Frank Shepard Fairey is an American street artist and activist from South Carolina. His first artworks were for personal use on t-shirts and skateboard decks inspired by the punk rock scene. He then started to create graffiti art using images such as Andre the Giant from the local newspapers. He has created stickers, wheat-paste posters, and murals which can make his viewers skeptical and uneasy due to its content and text. Fairey is best known for his controversial work, such as former president Barack Obama's HOPE campaign. This portrait caused Fairey years of lawsuits and millions of dollars for taking someone else's photograph, appropriating it, and making it his own. But was it enough?
