Parth Kothekar
In art, especially studio art, one would think of paper only as a surface to work upon, Right?.................................................................WRONG!
Parth Kothekar, an Indian artist intrigued by graffiti stencils, intricately transforms his paper surface into delicate illustrations. Although cut paper designs have been an art form for centuries, originating in China, Kothekar modernizes his designs, bringing it a new flare. His cut paper illustrations range in size from .5 inches to 5 feet, taking days, sometimes months to complete! Using Xacto and surgical blades, Kothekar carefully cuts out the negative spaces of his designs, having to restart with one simple mistake. |

Your Mission:
With this assignment, you will first create a minimum of 40 thumbnail sketches utilizing the different forms of balance,
learned from our Half Drawn project. Your thumbnail sketches can represent recognizable objects or they can be abstract designs.
Once your sketchbook assignment is completed, you will decipher which areas will be your negative and positive space, concepts learned from our Negative or Positive Space project. You will choose a minimum of 2 designs to create on a larger scale, cutting out the negative space designs.
The second part of the project will be a series of magazine strips, thinly cut and glued onto a backing paper. It can be one sheet from a magazine that has interesting colors, or you can cut strips from various pages, creating your own design with color.
When both parts of the project are completed, the cut paper portion of the assignment will be secured onto the magazine strips, emphasizing the positive and negative space.
